Your septic tank should be pumped every 3 to 5 years. A neglected septic tank may result in damage requiring expensive repairs, to include a new drain field.
The only thing that should be flushed down a toilet other than human waste is toilet paper. Feminine hygiene products, ”flushable” wipes, facial tissues, hair, diapers, paper towels, among other things can cause damage to your septic system.
Items such as grease, coffee grounds, and food particles can wreak havoc on your drains and septic system. This can result in expensive service repair calls.
Your septic tank is designed to operate on good bacteria. Chemicals such as bleach, drain cleaners and automatic toilet tank/bowl cleaners can disrupt your septic tank’s good bacteria, which is designed to break down waste. If you must use bleach such as in your washing machine, try to space out the usage. Drain cleaning products are rarely successful in clearing a clog. Try a plunger or auger instead.
We all love trees and shrubs, however, planting them too close to your drain field or septic tank can result in roots penetrating the field and tank. This may cause clogs and back-ups, sometimes requiring a complete system replacement.
